Almost every search engine optimizer has a different approach to working on a website in order to achieve the best results and create relevant traffic. Since we as a team at rueth online have worked on several hundred websites that run on WordPress, we also established some helpful guidelines.

1.) Permalinks / SEO-friendly URL structure

Concerning the URL structure, we usually avoid having categories or anything else in the slug. Keep the URLs lean and clean, no keyword stuffing or over-optimization. Think about your whole website structure before you actually build your website. Avoid duplications, since you do not want to have several pages on your website that actually compete for similar or even the same keywords.

2.) Yoast SEO WordPress plug-in

Yoast SEO ist definitely one of the best WordPress-plug-ins in order to boost your search engine optimization. There are many different settings to choose from, and you can find detailed references about how to find a great set-up. Make sure to exclude as many thin content pages as possible like tag, category or author pages.

We can not address this issue often enough: Google really ranks websites better that show great content throughout the whole site. A rookie mistake would be to not delete or edit the “hello world” and sample-page place-holder. Countless times, we have deleted pages like those after we took over clients from other SEO agencies that had worked on the client´s website for years (!).

3.) PageSpeed

Page really matters, nowadays more than ever. Make sure that you choose a WordPress theme that does not need 20 plug-ins in order to get started. Check the PageSpeed with tools like PageSpeed Insights or Pingdom, compress images, enable gzip and browser caching.

We update this page every now and then, so stay tuned in order to get the best tips around WordPress SEO.
